Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training - Dental Training Expanding Rural Placements (DTERP) Programme

What it does

The DTERP programme provides funding to support 6 Australian dental faculties in developing extended rural training programs. The faculties are at the:
  • University of Adelaide
  • Griffith University
  • University of Melbourne
  • University of Sydney
  • University of Queensland
  • University of Western Australia.

Funding is provided to support extended clinical placements in rural settings for up to 30 full time equivalent metropolitan dentistry students annually, representing five ongoing placements per university. Placements must be in Australian Standard Geographic Classification – Remoteness Areas (ASGC RA) 2-5.

Operational funding is for student and academic support and administration costs.

Capital funding has supported the development of rural educational facilities including:
  • teaching space
  • new dental chairs
  • student accommodation.

What it achieves

The programme aims to address the shortage of dentists in rural and remote Australia. Providing dental students with positive, high quality clinical education and training experiences in rural areas makes them more likely to take up a career in rural practice once they graduate.
