Medical Specialist Outreach Assistance Program - Indigenous Chronic Disease (MSOAP-ICD)

What it does

The Medical Specialist Outreach Assistance Program - Indigenous Chronic Disease (MSOAP ICD) program provides funding for multidisciplinary teams, which may include medical specialists, GPs and allied health professionals, to deliver outreach health services. Services focus on the treatment of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease and chronic renal (kidney) disease.

The program reimburses some of the expenses incurred by health professionals providing outreach services. Funds are available for:
  • the costs of travel
  • meals and accommodation
  • facility fees
  • administrative support at the outreach location
  • lease and transport of equipment
  • telephone support
  • up-skilling sessions for resident health professionals.

MSOAP-ICD delivers services to people living in Remoteness Area (RA) 2 (Inner Regional) to RA 5 (Very Remote).

The program is delivered through fundholders in each State and the Northern Territory. The fundholders contract with health professionals to deliver MSOAP services.

What it achieves

The MSOAP-ICD program aims to increase access to a range of health services, including expanded primary health care, provided to people in rural and remote Indigenous communities for the treatment and management of chronic disease.

It encourages health professionals to provide outreach services by covering their travel and related expenses.
