Higher Bulk Bill Incentives in Regional, Rural and Remote Areas - Tasmania and Metropolitan Areas
What it doesAll general practitioners (GPs) have the option to bulk bill their patients.
The Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) includes incentives to GPs who bulk bill Commonwealth Concession Card holders and children under 16 years of age.
These incentives are currently $6.15 for each bulk billed service provided by GPs in metropolitan areas, and $9.25 for each bulk billed service in regional, rural and remote areas, and in all of Tasmania. These payments increase annually, in line with indexation of other MBS items.
The higher bulk billing incentive of $9.25 can only be used where the service is provided at, or from, a practice location that is listed in MBS item 10991. This includes all regional, rural and remote areas (RRMA 3 to 7 under the Rural Remote Metropolitan Areas classification system), all of Tasmania, and those areas covered by Statistical Subdivision (SSD) or Statistical Local Areas listed in MBS item 10991, and MBS after-hours bulk billing item 10992.
What it achievesThe aim of providing incentives to encourage GPs to bulk bill Commonwealth Concession Card holders and children under 16 years of age, is to help improve access to health care for many Australians.
