The HECS Reimbursement Scheme reimburses HECS debts of medical students if they train or work in rural and remote communities.

Under the scheme, doctors can reduce the period for reimbursement of the cost of their medical studies from 5 years to 2 years, depending on the Australian Standard Geographical Classification – Remoteness Area (ASGC-RA) location of their training or practice.

Reimbursements are scaled as follows:
No. of years to receive reimbursement for a standard HECS-HELP place
5 years
4 years
3 years
2 years
The scaling of HECS reimbursement payments was introduced as an initiative of the Rural Health Workforce Strategy. The scheme offers the greatest rewards to doctors who are willing to work in the most remote areas.

What it achieves

The scheme encourages medical graduates to pursue a career in rural medicine, and so increases the number of doctors in rural and regional areas.
