Diagnostic Imaging (DI) Locations

What it does

Diagnostic imaging practices are located in areas throughout Australia, including rural and remote areas. These practices provide diagnostic imaging services which include ultrasound, diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine, CT and MRI.

Consumers requiring one of these services should contact their local practice to determine the imaging services they provide and whether the practice offers a Medicare rebate on services they provide.

In 2012 Medicare eligibility was granted to compliant existing and planned Medicare-ineligible MRI machines across Australia. MRI units received either partial or full Medicare eligibility, depending on whether they were located in a regional (fully eligible) or metropolitan (partially eligible) location.

From 1 November 2012, MRI items can be requested by GPs for children under the age of 16 years for a small set of indicators.

From 1 November 2013, new GP requested items for patients 16 years and over are available. This will improve access to MRI services to patients in primary care settings.

What it achieves

]Makes diagnostic imaging services available throughout Australia. The DI Review Reform Package will ensure ongoing, affordable, and convenient DI services for patients. A key focus is the staged expansion of patient access to Medicare-eligible MRI services. [
